2006 1973 Fibes
SFT 690 COF ( chrome over fiberglass ) This legendary drum features
a fiberglass shell w/real metal chrome wrap, not plastic. The Fibes
SFT throwoff is a beautifully designed piece that offers CONSTANT
TENSION of the snares, similar to a Rogers Dynasonic, but in a much
easier to set up and operate system. The drum also features FULLY
EXTENDED snares for extraordinary sensitivity and no choking. The
fiberglass shell gave the drum incredible reflectivity and brightness
in sound unsurpassed by the other wood/metal drums of the day. From

Slingerland Artist model in "full dress" from around 1934.
The drum has a solid maple shell like on a Radio King. The drum
has a tone control similar, but different, to the ones found on
later Slingerlands. It is the model that came right after the tone
flange model, and before the Broadcaster model... From the collection
of Rich K.

Why is this Slingerland drum in the drum of the month??? Looks like
a standard drum? Hmmm.. When we count the lugs it has 10! This had
to be a special order drum and I think this might be the first one
I have seen. Zoomatic Strainer
with a 3-ply shell. Photo courtesy

2005 The snare drum
is also superb. It has the correct Controlled Response Extension
Strainer that Ludwig offered from the early 40s til 1950. This strainer
had a three position stop for locking the snares in the full on,
full off, or halfway modes and can be seen in Robs Ludwig book on
page 203. Also, the butt plate is the correct Standard Snare Extension
Strainer butt plate and this can also be seen on page 203 of Robs
book. The snare drum has two internal tone control, which are factory
issued. Visit Steve Maxwell
to see the complete drum set! |

The drums were fitted with specially commissioned heads from Evans,
in a mirror gold finish. The snare wires, and even the drum key,
were also gold plated. The only exception to this was the Bird’s
Eye Maple finish, which was available with chrome hardware if desired.
Alongside all of this, a customized gold satin tour-jacket was included,
and it featured your name under the Gretsch logo on the front, and
on the back was... Click

6 x 14 Birdseye Maple, Gold Hardware: This drum is my favorite.
The nameplate on this drum reads “Billy Gladstone, Radio City
Music Hall”. This is reputed to be the last drum that Billy
built. Billy brought the drum with him in 1959 to perform a clinic
at Roy Harte’s Drum City in California. Billy left the drum
on consignment after the clinic. Billy died not long after, and
Roy kept the drum since Billy had hand delivered it, played it for
a clinic, and it looked and sounded beautiful. In 1963 Roy sold
the drum to Frank Clayman Cook. Cook was a student of Murray Spivak,
who was Billy’s star pupil. Cook went on to perform with the
60-70’s band Canned Heat, and actually used the drum on some
of the band’s performances. In 1993 Cook sold the drum to
Liam Mulholland, noted vintage drum expert, and he owned this drum
for many years before selling it to the person who owned it prior
to me. The drum has a complete history of all previous owners and
an autographed photo of Billy. There
were only four drums built by Billy with birdseye maple and gold
hardware. Of the 50 drums that Billy built, the only other drum
with Billy’s name on the nameplate is the gold lacquer drum
that he played most often. Visit the Steve
Maxwell Web Site Here! |

The drums make-up is typically WFL... Three ply mahogany/poplar/mahogany
shell with maple reinforcing rings. This shell configuration puts
the drums fundamental note in a lower area, but the 3" shell
depth takes care of that and supplies a nice "high end"
to the drum. The drum is very crisp and articulate.
Of interest is the Be-Bop Combo strainer/butt... ( aka "The
Beer Tap Strainer" )... They function beautifully and were
kept in production until 1956.

1967 5X14 Trixon 1/440 Standard/Luxus, Buddy Rich Model, in WMP.
Trixon/Vox drum shells were made by Sonor, thus these wood drums
are usually Birch, although there were Beech shells later as well.
The 1967 snare drums were 6 ply, no reinforcing rings, and featured
a Parallel strainer. Buddy stayed with Trixon/Vox for a very short
period, from early to mid 1967. These Trixon BR type snares are
rare. |

2005 Slingerland
Turqoise Veil 5 x 14, 8 lug Radio King with a solid maple shell.
It has the black /brass Chicago badge, COB rims and the three point
strainer with bridges and a two pad muffler. The only thing unusual
about this drum (other than the color) is that it has a date stamp
on the inside. Usually, Slingerland's solid maple shells didn't
have a date stamp. |

2005 This a 1966
5X14 wood Dynasonic in WMP, the exact same model drum that Buddy
Rich played while with Rogers. This particular drum can be seen
to excellent advantage on the front cover of the 1966 Buddy Rich
album: "Swingin' New Big Band". The 1966 Dynasonic is
a 5 ply Maple/Poplar shell with 5 ply reinforcement rings. The Dynasonic's
main identifying characteristic is the "snare frame" that
is lifted gently to just "kiss" the bottom head, resulting
in a very articulate/sensitive snare drum. The drum has no snare
beds to allow the snare frame to sit flatly on the bottom head when
engaged. These wood model Dynasonic's are pretty rare and highly
sought after, especially in Buddy's WMP. Buddy made this drum sing
like no one else! |
